Mexican Wine History
Mexican wine history is one of the oldest in the Americas, beginning in 1521 when Spanish settlers brought the first Vitis vinifera vines to New Spain. By the late 16th century, vineyards were flourishing, especially in northern regions such as Coahuila, Chihuahua, Querétaro, and Baja California. In 1699, King Charles II of Spain restricted wine production in Mexico to protect Spanish exports, allowing only sacramental wine for churches. This nearly stopped the industry for more than a century, but small, local traditions survived, particularly in the north. Modern Mexican winemaking began to revive in the 20th century, with Baja California becoming the country’s most important wine region. The Valle de Guadalupe now produces over 70% of Mexico’s wine, known for high-quality red blends, expressive whites, and unique terroir influenced by Mediterranean-like climate and Pacific breezes. Today, Mexican wine is experiencing a global renaissance, with independent wineries, sustainable practices, and international awards helping Mexico gain recognition in Europe and worldwide. Mexican wines combine Old World grape traditions with New World creativity, offering distinctive character, bold flavors, and strong regional identity.
